Depart Moshi or Arusha early in the morning and drive southwest toward Tarangire National Park. Arrive at the park gate in time for a full day of game driving along the banks of the Tarangire River — Tanzania's elephant capital and one of the most visually stunning landscapes in all of northern Tanzania.
Spend the day exploring the park's iconic ancient baobab forests, open grasslands, and seasonal swamps in search of Tarangire's remarkable wildlife. Elephant herds numbering in the hundreds are a regular sighting, alongside lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and more than 550 recorded bird species. A hot bush lunch is served in the park before continuing your afternoon game drive.
As the day comes to a close, depart Tarangire and drive to Karatu — a lush highland town nestled between Tarangire and the Ngorongoro highlands — where you will spend the night at your chosen lodge or campsite.

Rise before dawn for an early breakfast before departing Karatu and driving up through the lush Ngorongoro highlands to the crater rim. Begin your descent into the Ngorongoro Crater — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the natural wonders of Africa — as the morning mist lifts from the crater floor to reveal one of the most breathtaking wildlife landscapes on earth.
Spend a full morning and afternoon game driving across the crater floor — a self-contained ecosystem sheltering approximately 25,000 large animals within its ancient volcanic walls. Game viewing in the crater is among the finest available anywhere in Tanzania, with lion, Cape buffalo, hippo, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, and the critically endangered black rhinoceros all regularly encountered. The shallow waters of Lake Magadi host spectacular concentrations of flamingos and waterbirds that add color and drama to the extraordinary crater landscape.
A packed picnic lunch is enjoyed on the crater floor before continuing your afternoon game drive. In the late afternoon, ascend the crater rim and begin the drive back to Moshi or Arusha, arriving in the early evening.
