Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round — but not every month delivers the same experience. Weather patterns, crowd levels, and summit conditions vary significantly across the calendar. Choosing the right time to climb can make the difference between a successful, clear-skied summit and a wet, crowded slog through cloud.
Kilimanjaro has two primary dry seasons that correspond to the best climbing windows.
The months of January, February and early March offer excellent climbing conditions. The skies are often clear, temperatures are relatively mild at lower elevations, and the mountain is far less crowded than the peak July-to-August period. The summit zone can be cold and windy in January, but this is manageable with the right gear. This is one of the best-kept secrets in Kilimanjaro trekking — great conditions, fewer people.
Tanzania's long dry season delivers Kilimanjaro's most reliable weather window. July, August, and September are the busiest months on the mountain, but for good reason — visibility is excellent, the trails are dry and firm, and summit success rates are at their highest. If you are flexible, aim for June or early October to enjoy peak-season conditions with slightly smaller crowds.
April and May bring Tanzania's long rains. The lower forest zones become very wet, trails can be muddy and slippery, and cloud cover reduces summit visibility. Summit success rates drop. This period is not recommended for first-time climbers. That said, some experienced trekkers deliberately choose April or May for the lush, atmospheric forest experience and near-empty trails.
November brings Tanzania's short rain season. Rain is less intense and less consistent than April-May, and many November climbers have excellent experiences. The lower slopes are green and beautiful. Summit conditions can still be challenging, but a reasonable proportion of November climbers reach the top.
December is a mixed month. Early December can still see short rain activity, but conditions often improve by mid-month. The Christmas and New Year period sees a surge in climbers on the mountain — if you are climbing in late December, book well in advance.
The best months overall are January to March and June to October. For the best combination of good weather, excellent visibility, and manageable crowd levels, KILIPARK recommends January, February, June, or September as ideal months for your Kilimanjaro climb.
