The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's most extraordinary natural wonders — a vast, self-contained wildlife paradise sheltered inside the walls of the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. A single day on the crater floor can deliver sightings of all Big Five, including the rare black rhino. No other place in Tanzania — or Africa — consistently delivers this density and diversity of wildlife in such a spectacular setting.

What Is the Ngorongoro Crater?

The crater was formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed inward after an eruption. The resulting caldera measures 19 kilometres across and 600 metres deep, enclosing a floor of 260 square kilometres. Roughly 25,000 large animals live permanently within the crater walls — they are not fenced in, but the steep walls and abundant water and grass mean most animals stay. It is nature's own enclosed game reserve.

The Black Rhino of Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro is one of the best places in East Africa to see the critically endangered black rhino. A small population of around 25 to 30 individuals lives on the crater floor, and sightings are more reliable here than almost anywhere else on the continent. Your guide will know the most productive rhino areas and the patience to find them. A black rhino sighting on the Ngorongoro crater floor is one of Tanzania's greatest safari prizes.

Other Wildlife on the Crater Floor

Lions are plentiful and often relaxed around vehicles. The crater's lion population is genetically isolated and extraordinarily charismatic. Elephant bulls with massive tusks visit the crater regularly. Cape buffalo herds number in the thousands. Hippo pools on the crater floor are active year-round. Hyena clans are large and visible. Flamingos colour the shores of Lake Magadi pink. Over 500 bird species have been recorded.

Practical Guide to Visiting Ngorongoro

Crater access regulations limit the number of vehicles on the floor at any one time and require departure by 6pm. KILIPARK arrives early to maximise time on the floor and avoid the midday vehicle concentration. The descent road into the crater is steep and unpaved — a 4WD vehicle is essential. Park fees for the crater are in addition to Conservation Area fees.

Combine Ngorongoro with the Serengeti

Ngorongoro is most powerfully experienced as part of a broader northern circuit itinerary. KILIPARK's most popular packages combine 3 to 4 nights in the Serengeti with a full day on the Ngorongoro crater floor, plus options for Lake Manyara and Tarangire. Contact us to build your itinerary.
