Lake Natron is one of the most dramatic and otherworldly landscapes in all of Africa. A caustic, alkaline lake in the Rift Valley of northern Tanzania, Lake Natron turns a vivid crimson red in the dry season — coloured by the salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in its extreme waters. And yet, in this hostile, scalding environment, up to 2.5 million lesser flamingos come to breed — the largest flamingo breeding colony in the world.
Lake Natron is not a conventional safari destination — it is something rarer and more profound. It is a place of fire, salt, and improbable life. The lake sits in the shadow of Ol Doinyo Lengai — the "Mountain of God" in Maasai — an active carbonatite volcano that is one of the most unique geological features in the world. Trekking Ol Doinyo Lengai at night to reach the crater at sunrise is one of Tanzania's most extreme and spectacular adventures.
Lesser and greater flamingo (in massive numbers during breeding season), white pelican, yellow-billed stork, African fish eagle, various wading birds, and the extraordinary crimson-red salt crust landscape of the lake itself. The surrounding escarpments support Maasai communities and klipspringer on the rocky slopes.
Rising 2,878 metres above the Rift Valley floor, Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active natrocarbonatite volcano in the world — erupting black lava that turns white in contact with air. A night trek to the summit takes 5 to 7 hours and delivers a sunrise from the crater rim above the clouds, with Lake Natron glowing red far below. One of Tanzania's most unforgettable physical challenges.
June to October is optimal — dry conditions, accessible roads, and the flamingo breeding season at its peak. The green season brings heavy rains that can make access difficult but transforms the landscape dramatically.
KILIPARK offers Lake Natron as a 2 to 3-day off-the-beaten-track expedition from Moshi, combinable with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti on a northern circuit extension. Ol Doinyo Lengai night treks arranged on request. Maasai cultural visits and flamingo walks included. This is Tanzania for the adventurous.
