Nyerere National Park — Africa's Largest Game Reserve

Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is the largest protected wildlife area in Africa — a staggering 30,000 square kilometres of pristine wilderness in southern Tanzania. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nyerere is defined by the great Rufiji River that winds through its heart, creating a network of lakes, channels, and floodplains that support one of the continent's most diverse and spectacular wildlife ecosystems.

What Makes Nyerere Extraordinary

Nyerere offers something no northern Tanzania park can: boat safaris. Drifting silently along the Rufiji River in a small motorboat, past hippo pods, basking crocodiles, and elephant herds drinking at the bank — with no vehicle engine, no dust, no distance — is a completely different and deeply intimate safari experience. Combined with traditional game drives and walking safaris (available in designated areas), Nyerere delivers the full spectrum of African bush adventure.

What You Will See

African wild dog (one of the largest populations in Africa), lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant (over 13,000), hippo, Nile crocodile, Cape buffalo (enormous herds), sable antelope, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, impala, waterbuck, reedbuck, and over 440 bird species including the rare Pel's fishing owl.

Boat Safari on the Rufiji River

The boat safari is Nyerere's signature experience. The Rufiji River is one of East Africa's most important wildlife waterways — broad, slow-moving, and teeming with life along every bank. You will drift past sleeping crocodiles, watch elephant families wade across shallow channels, and observe kingfishers, fish eagles, and herons in extraordinary numbers. It is peaceful, beautiful, and thrilling all at once.

Best Time to Visit Nyerere

June to October is the best season — low water levels concentrate wildlife on the river banks and the dry bush opens up the game viewing. The park closes partially during the heaviest rains (March to May) but operates year-round in the core photographic zone.

Nyerere Safari with KILIPARK

KILIPARK operates Nyerere National Park safaris as part of its southern Tanzania circuit, including fly-in packages from Dar es Salaam and combination itineraries with Ruaha National Park.
