Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's largest national park and one of Africa's greatest safari secrets. Covering over 20,226 square kilometres of rugged, remote wilderness in the country's southern highlands, Ruaha delivers a raw, unfiltered safari experience that the northern circuit's more famous parks simply cannot replicate. This is Tanzania without the crowds — vast, dramatic, and almost entirely yours.
Ruaha is home to Tanzania's largest lion population, with some of the biggest prides on the continent. It is also one of East Africa's most important strongholds for the African wild dog — one of the continent's most endangered and electrifying predators. Add enormous elephant herds, huge buffalo concentrations, and rare greater and lesser kudu, and Ruaha delivers a Big Five and beyond experience in a landscape of extraordinary geological drama.
African wild dog, lion (large prides), leopard, cheetah, elephant, Cape buffalo, hippo, crocodile, greater kudu, lesser kudu, sable antelope, roan antelope, Grant's gazelle, impala, giraffe, zebra, and over 570 bird species including the rare Eleonora's falcon and Ruaha red-billed hornbill.
The Great Ruaha River is the park's lifeline — a broad, sandy river lined with fig and mahogany trees where wildlife congregates year-round. Hippo pools stretch along the banks, crocodiles bask on sandbanks, and elephant herds cross daily. Watching a wild dog pack drinking at the river at dawn, alert and nervous, is an experience that stays with you permanently.
June to October is the prime season when the dry conditions concentrate wildlife along the Great Ruaha River and other water sources. The green season (November to May) offers dramatic landscapes, birdlife at its peak, and the possibility of witnessing wild dog pups at denning sites.
KILIPARK offers Ruaha National Park as part of its southern Tanzania safari circuit — a perfect extension for travellers who want to go beyond the classic northern route. Remote tented camp accommodation, fly-in options from Dar es Salaam, and expert guides with deep knowledge of Ruaha's wild dog territories and lion pride ranges. This is for safari travellers who want more.
