Serengeti National Park — Where the Wild Things Are

The Serengeti is Africa's most iconic safari destination — a vast, golden wilderness stretching over 14,763 square kilometres of open savanna, acacia woodland, and granite kopjes. This is the stage for the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth: the Great Migration, where over 1.5 million wildebeest and 500,000 zebra thunder across the plains in an ancient, unstoppable cycle of life and survival.

Why Visit Serengeti National Park?

No wildlife destination on the planet matches the Serengeti for sheer abundance. Predator densities here are extraordinary — lion prides of up to 30 individuals, cheetah coalitions sprinting across open plains, leopards draped across sausage tree branches, and hyena clans patrolling in the dark. The Serengeti is also one of Tanzania's best birding destinations, with over 500 recorded species.

The Great Migration

The annual Great Migration is the defining event of the Serengeti calendar. As the rains move, the herds move — from the southern short-grass plains in January and February, northward through the western corridor in June and July, and into the Mara River crossing zones of the north from August to October. The Mara River crossings — where thousands of animals leap into crocodile-filled water — are among the most dramatic events in the natural world.

What You Will See

Wildebeest, zebra, Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle, lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, elephant, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, serval, hyena, and over 500 bird species including martial eagle, secretary bird, and lilac-breasted roller.

Best Time to Visit Serengeti

The Serengeti rewards visitors year-round. January to March brings the calving season to the southern plains — thousands of newborn wildebeest and every predator in the park. June to October is peak season for the Migration river crossings in the north. The dry season (June to October) offers the best game viewing as wildlife concentrates around water.
