Zanzibar is one of the Indian Ocean's most captivating destinations — a coral island of dazzling white beaches, turquoise water, ancient Stone Town streets, and the lingering scent of cloves and cinnamon that gave it the name Spice Island. Part of Tanzania, yet a world apart, Zanzibar rewards every traveller who takes the time to explore beyond the beach.
Zanzibar is reached by ferry from Dar es Salaam (approximately 2 hours) or by short domestic flight from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Kilimanjaro International Airport (30 to 45 minutes). KILIPARK arranges all Zanzibar transfers as part of our Tanzania combination packages. The fast ferry is the most popular and economical option; the flight is worth the premium for its extraordinary aerial view of the island approaching over the Indian Ocean.
Nungwi in the north is Zanzibar's most developed beach resort area — lively, social, and beautiful, with calm year-round swimming conditions. Kendwa, a short walk from Nungwi, is slightly quieter with the same excellent beach. Paje on the east coast is the kitesurfer's paradise with consistent wind and a more backpacker-oriented vibe. Matemwe on the northeast coast offers pristine, uncrowded reef snorkelling and boutique accommodation. Stone Town is the cultural heart — staying here for at least one night is strongly recommended.
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary urban environments in sub-Saharan Africa. Its narrow alleyways, intricately carved wooden doors, Persian bathhouses, Arab fort, and Indian merchant mansions are living records of a city that was once the commercial capital of the Indian Ocean. Getting genuinely lost in Stone Town's streets is one of the great travel experiences — KILIPARK offers guided walking tours that bring the history alive in ways a solo wander cannot.
June to October (the dry Kaskazi season) is peak season — sunny, warm, and ideal for beach holidays. December to February is also excellent. The long rains fall April to May; the short rains come in November. Even in the rainy season, Zanzibar's showers are typically short and the island remains warm and lush.
Dala-dala (shared minibuses) connect most of the island cheaply and authentically. Private car hire with driver is the most comfortable option for day trips and excursions. Bajaj (three-wheeled tuk-tuks) are the standard Stone Town transport. KILIPARK arranges all island transportation for clients as part of our Zanzibar packages.
