The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo, and black rhino — were originally named by big game hunters as the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. Today they represent the five animals every safari traveller most wants to see. Tanzania is one of the best countries in Africa for Big Five sightings, with excellent populations of all five species across its national parks.
Tanzania has the highest lion population of any country in Africa, with over 8,000 individuals across its protected areas. Lions are frequently seen on Serengeti game drives — often in large prides, sometimes sleeping in acacia trees, occasionally mid-hunt or feeding. Ngorongoro Crater lion sightings are almost guaranteed. Ruaha and Nyerere have exceptional lion populations for a more remote experience. Best parks: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Ruaha, Nyerere.
Leopard sightings require patience and an expert eye. These solitary, nocturnal cats are masters of camouflage — often overlooked until a guide spots the tip of a tail hanging from a branch. The central Serengeti kopjes and riverine woodland deliver the best leopard sighting odds. Lake Manyara's groundwater forest is another excellent area. Best parks: Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro.
Tanzania's elephant populations are large and recovering. Tarangire has the highest elephant density in the country during the dry season — the sight of hundreds of elephants at the river is one of Africa's great spectacles. Nyerere and Ruaha also hold enormous herds. Ngorongoro crater sees regular visits from impressive old bulls. Best parks: Tarangire, Serengeti, Nyerere, Ruaha, Ngorongoro.
Buffalo are the most numerous of the Big Five in Tanzania. Enormous herds — sometimes thousands strong — are a regular Serengeti sighting. Ngorongoro crater buffalo are plentiful and often close to the road. Old dagga boy bulls — solitary males expelled from the herd — are common around water sources in most parks. Best parks: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Nyerere, Tarangire.
Black rhino are critically endangered with fewer than 6,000 individuals remaining globally. Tanzania's most reliable sightings are in Ngorongoro Crater, where a small protected population is regularly seen on crater floor game drives. Serengeti also has a small rhino population. A black rhino sighting is never guaranteed but is more achievable in Ngorongoro than almost anywhere else in Africa. Best parks: Ngorongoro, Serengeti.
