The Serengeti and the Masai Mara are two halves of the same extraordinary ecosystem — the Serengeti-Mara, the greatest wildlife landscape on Earth. They share the same animal populations, the same Migration, and the same fundamental drama of African savanna life. Yet they are distinctly different experiences. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.

Geography and Scale

The Serengeti covers 14,763 square kilometres — roughly the size of Northern Ireland. The Masai Mara is 1,510 square kilometres, a fraction of the size. This scale difference defines the experience. In the Serengeti, you can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle in the right season. In the Mara, the concentration of wildlife AND vehicles is intense. Both are extraordinary; the experience of scale is fundamentally different.

The Great Migration: Tanzania vs Kenya

The Migration spends approximately 9 months of the year in Tanzania's Serengeti and 3 months in Kenya's Masai Mara. The calving season (the single most dramatic event in the Migration calendar) happens exclusively in the southern Serengeti. The most famous Mara River crossings occur in both countries — the Mara River runs through both the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara simultaneously. If the Migration is your priority, Tanzania offers more of it for more of the year.

Accommodation and Crowds

The Masai Mara has a higher concentration of camps and a higher vehicle density during peak season (August to October). The Serengeti's scale means that even in peak season, spreading out across the park delivers far more isolated, exclusive game viewing. If you value space, silence, and being the only vehicle at a sighting, the Serengeti's advantage is decisive.

Beyond the Migration: Wildlife Year-Round

The Serengeti's year-round wildlife is exceptional. Lion density is among the highest in Africa. Cheetah on the open short-grass plains are more visible than almost anywhere else. The southern and central Serengeti deliver phenomenal game viewing even when the Migration is in Kenya. The Mara is excellent year-round but lacks the ecological diversity and scale of the Serengeti ecosystem.

The Verdict for Tanzania Travellers

The Serengeti is the better choice for most first-time Tanzania visitors — more space, more ecological diversity, longer Migration season, and the ability to combine seamlessly with Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar in one trip. KILIPARK's Serengeti safaris depart from Moshi and deliver the full, private, expert-guided Serengeti experience.
