Packing for a Tanzania safari is a balance between being prepared for every condition and not overpacking a bag that has to fit into small safari vehicles and light aircraft. This list covers everything you actually need — and flags a few things you definitely do not.

The Clothing Principle: Think Layers and Neutrals

Safari clothing should be neutral-coloured — khaki, olive green, tan, and light brown. Avoid blue (attracts tsetse flies), white (shows dust), and bright colours that disturb wildlife. Layers are essential because temperatures swing dramatically between a pre-dawn game drive (sometimes 8°C to 12°C) and an afternoon on the open plains (30°C+).

Clothing Checklist

Lightweight long-sleeved shirts (3 to 4) for sun and insect protection. Short-sleeved safari shirts (2 to 3). Lightweight convertible trousers (2 to 3 pairs). Fleece or light down jacket for cold morning drives. Waterproof shell jacket (essential in the green season). Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots. Sandals for camp evenings. Wide-brimmed sun hat. Warm beanie for early mornings in the dry season. Sunglasses. Swimwear if your accommodation has a pool.

Equipment and Accessories

Binoculars — arguably the most important item after clothing. An 8x42 or 10x42 pair transforms every game drive. Camera with telephoto lens (200mm minimum; 400mm+ ideal for birds and distant cats). Spare memory cards and batteries. A lightweight daypack or camera bag for the vehicle. Power bank for charging electronics. Universal travel adaptor. Headlamp or torch. Small dry bag to protect electronics from dust.

Health and Safety

DEET-based insect repellent — Tanzania is a malaria zone, particularly at lower elevations. Antimalarial medication — consult your doctor well in advance. High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm. Hand sanitiser. Personal first aid kit including diarrhoea treatment, antihistamine, and plasters. Any personal prescription medications in sufficient quantity with a copy of the prescription.

What to Leave at Home

Heavy luggage. Many Tanzania safari camps and all light aircraft transfers impose strict baggage limits — usually 15kg total in a soft-sided bag. Valuables and excessive jewellery. Camouflage clothing — it is illegal in Tanzania. Drones — not permitted in national parks without a special permit.
