The Great Migration is the largest overland animal movement on the planet — 1.5 million wildebeest, 500,000 zebra, and hundreds of thousands of gazelle circling endlessly through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in a 3,000-kilometre annual journey driven entirely by rain, grass, and the ancient instinct to survive. Witnessing it is the defining moment of many people's lives.
The Migration moves in a broadly clockwise circle between the southern Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. The entire circuit is in motion year-round — there is no beginning and no end, just an endless loop. The key is knowing where the herds are in any given month, which is where an expert guide becomes essential.
December to March: Herds are in the southern Serengeti short-grass plains near Ndutu. January and February deliver the calving season — the most intense predator-prey drama of the year. April to May: Herds move northwest through the central Serengeti as the long rains arrive. June to July: Western corridor crossing season as the herds push north. August to October: The Mara River crossing season in the northern Serengeti — the most famous and dramatic phase of the Migration. November: Herds begin the return journey south.
Nothing in nature compares to a Mara River crossing. Thousands of wildebeest accumulate on the southern bank, milling in nervous circles for hours — sometimes days — before the first animal finally commits and jumps. Then the herd floods in after it. Nile crocodiles, some over 4 metres long, explode from the water. The noise, the chaos, the sheer biological urgency of it is overwhelming. KILIPARK guides know the crossing points and crossing season patterns intimately.
Book accommodation 6 to 12 months in advance for peak Migration season (July to October). The best camps are mobile camps that follow the herds — book these especially early. A minimum of 4 nights in the Serengeti is recommended to maximise crossing sighting chances. Combine with Ngorongoro Crater for the most complete Tanzania safari experience.
