Twelve kilometres wide, 600 metres deep, and two million years old — the Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and one of the most extraordinary natural wonders on Earth. This ancient bowl shelters over 25,000 large animals within its walls, creating the highest concentration of wildlife anywhere in Africa. A single day on the crater floor delivers what many parks cannot provide in a week.
Ngorongoro is one of the few places in Tanzania where all of the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino — can be seen on a single game drive. The black rhino population here is one of the most accessible in East Africa, a rare privilege given the species' critical conservation status. The crater's self-contained ecosystem means wildlife does not migrate out — it stays, concentrates, and thrives.
Black rhino, lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo, hippo, hyena, golden jackal, cheetah, wildebeest, zebra, Grant's and Thomson's gazelle, flamingo on Lake Magadi, and over 500 bird species including kori bustard, grey crowned crane, and augur buzzard.
Beyond the crater itself, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers 8,292 square kilometres of highland forest, open savanna, and the ancient Olduvai Gorge — one of the world's most important paleoanthropological sites where early human fossils over 1.8 million years old have been discovered. The conservation area is also home to the Maasai people, who continue their traditional pastoral way of life across these lands.
Ngorongoro is rewarding year-round. The dry season (June to October) offers clear skies and concentrated wildlife around the crater floor's water sources. The green season (November to May) brings dramatic cloud formations, lush vegetation, and active flamingo populations on Lake Magadi.
KILIPARK includes Ngorongoro Crater in most northern circuit safari itineraries, typically paired with the Serengeti. Our guides are licensed for crater floor access and know every lion pride territory, rhino patrol zone, and hippo pool on the floor. Full-day crater drives with picnic lunch on the rim are available, as well as overnight crater rim lodge stays for a more immersive experience.
