Tarangire National Park is Tanzania's greatest safari secret. While the Serengeti and Ngorongoro draw the crowds, Tarangire delivers an equally extraordinary experience in a landscape so cinematic — ancient baobab trees, red volcanic earth, the winding Tarangire River — that every moment feels like a scene from a film. In the dry season, Tarangire hosts the largest elephant population of any park in Tanzania, with hundreds of elephants converging daily on the river to drink.
Tarangire is the land of giants. Giant elephants, ancient baobabs, and vast open skies. The park covers 2,850 square kilometres of mixed woodland, riverine forest, and open grassland — rich, layered habitat that supports an exceptional range of species. Unlike the more visited parks, Tarangire offers a more intimate, uncrowded safari experience where you can spend an hour with a single elephant herd without another vehicle in sight.
Elephant (in spectacular dry-season concentrations), lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog (rare but present), fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, greater kudu, impala, Grant's gazelle, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, python, monitor lizard, and over 550 bird species — one of the highest counts of any Tanzanian park.
Tarangire contains the highest concentration of ancient baobab trees in East Africa. These extraordinary trees — some over 1,000 years old, with trunks wider than houses — create a landscape found nowhere else on the continent. Photographing elephants among the baobabs at golden hour is one of the most celebrated safari images in the world, and it happens here, routinely, every dry season.
June to October is peak season when drought conditions concentrate thousands of elephants and other wildlife along the Tarangire River. November to May brings the green season — lush, dramatic landscapes, excellent birding, and newborn wildlife across the park.
Tarangire is a cornerstone of KILIPARK's northern circuit safari packages, typically combined with Lake Manyara for a powerful 3 to 4-day itinerary. Our expert drivers know the elephant herd territories, the wild dog denning areas, and the best baobab viewpoints in the park. Private vehicle, expert guide, full-board accommodation — all included.
